The pageant evening was hosted by Harthill Lodge No 8443, and took place at the conclusion of their regular meeting at Garston Masonic Hall. The evening commenced with the lodge and visiting brethren gathering to conduct the routine business of the lodge, which included the election of officers for the ensuing year.

Following the collection of alms, the lodge was closed before the ladies and guests were invited to join the brethren in the lodge room. In all some 60 people gathered to await the entrance of the pageant team. The team consisted of 10 members of the St Helens and Prescot Group, who have during the past 12 months, entertained lodges throughout the Province.

The pageant consists of a timeline covering the period 1646 – 1717, when Anthony Sayer was appointed as the first ever WM of the new Grand Lodge. Whilst earnestly detailing the many events which culminated in the establishment of Grand Lodge, the team added humour and a drollness into their performance, which enhanced the enjoyment of all present.

The pageant cast of Frank Davies, David Burgess, Norman Lay, Stewart Seddon, John Roughly. Allen Yates, John Dawson and Allen Jones have devoted many hours of work in researching their subject and in their performances, a point the WM of Harthill Lodge Jim Gwyther, was especially keen to mention when thanking the players on behalf of the entire audience.

With the performance concluded, everyone gathered in the hall’s main dining room. The DC for the evening, group vice chairman Dave Atkinson, then begged the attention of the brethren and their guests whilst the WM, accompanied by the pageant team, made their entrance into the dining room, where they were roundly welcomed. At the conclusion of the dinner, various raffles and auctions were conducted, including a number of sporting items, with over £600 being raised in support of the charities.

A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining evening provided a suitable reward for those venturing out on such a miserable winter’s evening.
