Group Bulletin November 2016

Welcome to our November bulletin which I hope you will find of interest.

INSTALLATIONS

We have two very important occasions taking place at Garston over the next few weeks. The first is the installation at the Lodge of Harmony when we will be honoured to receive the Deputy Provincial Grand Master together with our Assistant Provincial Grand Master as the principal guests.  The installation is on Wednesday, 23 November 2016 and usually commences at 5:00 pm

The second important occasion is the installation at the Chapter of Harmony on 7 December 2016 when the Grand Superintendent will be the principal guest.

I trust you will all do your best to attend these occasions and make them memorable for the principal guests and for the lodge and chapter. It would be really wonderful to see both the lodge room and the dining room full to capacity.

Bookings for the Lodge of Harmony should be made via their secretary Tom Jones, who can be contacted on 0151 527 1915 or at thomas512@btinternet.com.

For the chapter installation please contact the Group Vice Chairman John Murphy, who is for the time being acting as ScribeE of the chapter. He can be contacted at garstonvicechairman@icloud.com

images2ARMISTICE  DAY

As I mentioned last month, there will again be a wreath laying ceremony at the Garston War Memorial at 11:00am on Sunday 13 November 2016. This has been arranged by our friends in the Mark Degree and I urge you to support them and pay your respects to those fallen in all conflicts. Masonic collars may be worn.

Please assemble at the War Memorial at 10:45am to be in good time for this short service.

Derek Horrocks has also arranged for Sunday lunch to be served at the hall at 1:00pm and bookings should be made through Derek at – degsie14@gmail.com before 7 November.

The menu was in last month’s bulletin and the cost per person is approximately £11.00 per head. This is for a full three course meal followed by entertainment from Sara Lowe who will bring an atmosphere of the 1940’s to the afternoon.

There will also be a raffle, the proceeds of which will be donated to a military charity. Donations for the raffle will be gratefully received.

Again, please do your best to make this afternoon a successful one after all the hard work that has been put in in order to make the arrangements.

THE MAD MASON

I am delighted to say that our very own ‘Mad Mason” Kevin Ashcroft recently completed his trial of strength on the three Welsh Peaks.123

The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, lesser known than the National or Yorkshire Challenges, takes in the three peaks of Wales: Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in the North, Cadair Idris in mid-Wales, and Pen y Fan in the South.

The Welsh Three Peaks includes a total walking distance of 47 miles (75.7km) and an ascent of around 1085 meters on Snowdon, 893 metres on Cadair Idris and 886 metres on Pen y Fan usually in less than 24-hours. The last of the three is better known as one of the training courses for the SAS.

Kevin completed the challenge in less than 24 hours and told me that it was probably the hardest feat of human strength that he had ever undertaken. Strangely he indicated that the ascent of Cadair Idris was the most challenging of the three.

He is collecting his sponsorship monies at the moment although to date over £370 has been donated, so if you haven’t yet paid him, please do so ASAP. His proceeds will be going to the prostate cancer charity

You can make a donation via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Kevin-Ashcroft so please try and help this magnificent effort by Kevin.

2016 CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Once again the hall directors are funding a Christmas party for the children of the Garston Group. The numbers will strictly limited to just 50 children with a maximum age of 10.

The event is on Sunday 11 December starting at 12.30pm. For full details and booking form click here 2016 Children’s Christmas Party

Ladies to Dine/Christmas Cards
We are approaching the ladies to dine season and most of our lodges will be having these events at their December meetings.  If your lodge doesn’t hold such an event, or you are in a chapter which doesn’t have one, why not join in and support one of our lodges who are inviting their ladies to join them for dinner and a little Christmas spirit.

As we approach Christmas I am encouraging all our lodges and chapters to participate in our Christmas card initiative which has been running for the past few years.  It is simple really.  Instead of exchanging cards in lodge or chapter, I suggest that a donation of at least £5.00 each be made in lieu of cards.  This can be collected by the lodge or chapter treasurer and paid to the group treasurer in the New Year.

This year it is intended that the ‘Friends of Tithebarn’ should benefit from these donations, indeed this very worthy cause will be the  nominated charity of our group scheme and it is hoped lodges and chapters will also consider supporting this local charity.

N.B. If however you still wish to exchange cards as well, please do so.

Paul had held this position for a number of years and the Grand Superintendent expressed his appreciation for all the work which Paul had undertaken during his tenure.

As a result of Paul’s retirement Sam Robinson, our group ‘Assistant’ has, in addition been appointed to the position in the Liverpool Group.

If you would like to order any of them you are quite in order to do so directly via the Provincial shop which is due to go live on 1 November. However, I am happy to place your order for you in which case you will not have to pay the £2 postal charge.

Simply decide which items you want, add up the total and send the order form above to me with a cheque for the total amount (excluding the postage) made payable to “The Garston Group”

When I have received all the applications I will arrange to collect the items and distribute them to you at the hall.

I recommend that you let me know before the end of November what you require, and then I can place the order before Christmas. Hopefully that will enable me to collect the goods for distribution early in January.  The items have sold very well indeed and at the moment some of them are in short supply but they are expecting a new delivery in the not too distant future.

Keep up to date with the hall calendar as well as other important events.
