After serving the Garston Group for over 19 years Howard Griffiths has decided to retire from his office as group chairman.
Howard has written an open letter to all the members of the Garston Group (see below).
Over this 19 year period Howard has served as secretary, vice chairman and, for the past 5 years chairman. In that time there has scarcely been an installation or celebration that he hasn’t attended. During this time he has enjoyed the unstinting support of his wife, Linda.
No doubt you will wish to offer your own thanks to Howard for all the years of service to the group and to wish him and Linda well for the future.
I’m sure we will continue to enjoy his company though his membership of the lodges and chapters within the Garston Group.

Brethren and Companions all,
Late last year I made no secret of my intention to retire as Garston Group Chairman at the end of the season.
There have been numerous rumours about what will happen when I finish and I am now in a position to quell these and to let you know what is happening.
I recently confirmed to our Provincial Grand Master and our Assistant Provincial Grand Master that I intend to retire with effect from Provincial Grand Lodge on 10th May 2017. The PGM has accepted my decision, with regret, and thanked me for my work in the Garston Group. In May I will have completed 19 years as a Group Officer having accepted the position of Group Secretary in 1998. I have now completed 5 years as Group Chairman.
I have fully enjoyed every minute of my involvement and have made many good friends both within the Group and in the Province generally. I have always done what I consider to be in the best interests of all the Group members and also for the Province, both in the Craft and the Royal Arch.
I thank you all for what you have done for me and in particular, I thank all the Group Officers past and present who have worked with me during this period. Without them it just wouldn’t have happened. The work of any Group Officer is extremely demanding and much appreciated.
My thanks also go to my wife, Linda, who has supported me since my first appointment. I haven’t a clue how many white shirts she has ironed or how many evenings she has eaten alone. I do know that on occasions she has been fed up with my being out 4 or 5 times a week.
I will certainly miss it but there is never a right time to do these things.
On a happier note I am delighted to announce that our Provincial Grand Master has appointed the Vice Chairman, John Murphy, to succeed me as your new Group Chairman. He has also appointed David Atkinson as Group Vice Chairman; both effective from 10th May 2017. I will be happy to give them any assistance they require.
Thank you all, once again, for making my 19 years very happy.
I wish you all continued enjoyment in whatever aspects of Freemasonry you are involved.
The Provincial Grand Master having accepted Howard’s retirement, has been pleased to appoint current group vice chairman, John Murphy, as Howard’s successor with group secretary, Dave Atkinson, promoted to vice chairman. We wish them both well and offer our congratulations on their appointments.
